Handwoven wool rug showing a map of Islamic countries in the Middle East and Asia with 6 mosques shown either side. Afghanistan has a long history of producing pictorial rugs, weaving stories into each piece, from the invasion of Afghanistan by the USSR to the invasion by the USA. The vast majority of weavers have been women and girls who have illustrated and documented their environments.
There are several examples of this design which document a map of Muslim countries with the names in Arabic as well as English. This piece would have been made to have hung on a wall.
