£375.00

Thai Hill tribe textile.
Hemp indigo cloth with batik wax design and cotton appliqué.
Hemp fabric is an essential part of the Hmong way of life, some tribes believing that wearing clothes made of hemp will allow them to meet their ancestors in the next world after death.
Every family will plant hemp to use for weaving their clothing which will then be decorated with hot wax drawing before dyeing. The wax-resist dyeing technique, or batik, is considered an important characteristic of the Hmong tribal textile.
There are 9 hill tribes within Northern Thailand, namely, Karen (Pakaguryor), Iu- Mien, Hmong, Lahu, AKha, Lizu, Dara-ang (Pa Long), Kachin and Lua (La Wue) each with their own unique textile traditions drawn from their distinct histories and ways of life.
