koinobori koi carp

£400.00

Japanese koinobori koi carp windsock. Traditionally flown on children’s day called -Kodomo no hi.

This piece is handprinted on cotton, with beautiful rich blues, some shimmering silver and deep oranges. It once had a wooden circle that would have fit in the mouth for it to fly but has been removed.

Children's Day takes place on May 5, the largest break for workers and also a week in which many businesses, state schools, and some private schools close for up to 9–10 days for the designated national holidays. Landscapes across Japan are decorated with koinobori from April to early May, in honour of children for a good future and in the hope that they will grow up healthy and strong.

C.1920’s

600×140cm

Disclaimer: Due to it being hand painted, the paint transfers on contact. Leaving a dull grey on hands or walls if hanging. It does wash off easily as it is water based.
