A Persian silk velvet wall hanging with silk back.

Repeat mirrored design of women plaiting their hair, this motif representing sisterhood was often used in Persian miniature paintings during the 16th and 17th century. Hair and the amount of plaits could often symbolise a women’s age or marital status with married women having 2 plaits and elderly women having up to 40 in certain communities.

In person this piece has a beautiful sheen from the silk velvet and you can clearly see the motif.
