Yaruba aso oke ipele cloth

£300.00

Chocolate brown, maroon and bright blue cotton with punch type holes showing pinching of wefts to form the holes. This Nigerian Yoruba cloth is a more recent example of a very old tradition of weaving. Originally these pieces would have been woven using silk however the larger scale of production over the last 50 years or so has meant cotton is now more widely used. Made up of thin panels which are later sewn together to create the larger textile. Beautiful patches added with the woven holes creating a beautiful pattern through out.

Aso Oke is the name for the type of weave with punched holes.

Ipele is what would be traditionally worn over the shoulders of women.
