C.1970, geometric embroidery of sequins and glass beads with a burgundy silk border. Indistinctly monogrammed and dated 'PN 70' in lower right corner.

Haitian drapo art flag.

There are two kinds of drapo Vodou. The drapo servis are made for ceremonial use, and art flags are made for sale. The embroidered flag is often decorated with sequins or beads. Since the 1950s there has been growing demand for Vodou art by tourists and collectors. The iconography of the Haitian Vodou religion combines elements from Africa, Europe and the Americas. Thus a drapo made for an African spirit may include an image of a Catholic saint. The saint's image was originally in part designed to deceive Catholic missionaries, but also was chosen in recognition of similarity between the saint and the lwa. Since then the saint and the spirit have become syncronized. The drapo Vodou drew on Yoruba beadwork, Catholic vestments and Masonic aprons.
