Japanese hemp Kaya mosquito net tent
Japanese mosquito net tent made of natural hemp fibres and dyed with natural indigo with patched over maroon corners. C. 1940.
These would traditionally be hung from the ceiling over sleeping on mats on the floor.
Mosquito nets called Kaya are insect-repellent nets that were used all over Japan since ancient times. This dark green color is dyed by mixing turmeric, indigo, persimmon and tannin. Several places have been repaired by beautiful Sashiko stitching with some other ramie fabrics and hemp threads. Some holes due to age.
